Amiodarone Injection (Contd)




Side effects

Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.

  • Headache
  • Slower than normal heart beat (bradycardia)
  • Inability of a man to have an erection (impotence)
  • Sweating
  • Nightmares
  • Abnormal reaction of the skin to light, usually a rash (photosensitivity)
  • Damage to the liver (hepatotoxicity)
  • Disorder of the peripheral nerves causing weakness and numbness (peripheral neuropathy)
  • Disease of the muscles (myopathy)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Hot flushes
  • Damage to the lungs (pulmonary toxicity)
  • Hair loss (alopecia)
  • Interference with thyroid function
  • Micro-deposits in the cornea (protective outer layer of the eye) (corneal microdeposits)
  • The side effects listed above may not include all of the side effects reported by the drug's manufacturer. For more information about any other possible risks associated with this medicine, please read the information provided with the medicine or consult your doctor or pharmacist.

    How can this medicine affect other medicines?

    There is an increased risk of slow heart rate and slowed conduction of electrical signals within the heart when used with the following; these combinations are not recommended:- - beta-blockers e.g. propranolol - calcium channel blockers e.g. diltiazam and verapamil There is an increased risk of irregular heartbeat (Torsades de Pointes / ventricular arrhythmias) if taken with the following; these medicines must not be taken with amiodarone:- other anti-arrhythmics e.g. sotalol, bretylium, disopyramide, procainamide, quinidine intravenous antibiotics erythromycin, pentamidine or co-trimoxazole tricyclic antidepressants e.g. doxepin, amitriptyline, maprotiline antihistamines e.g. terfenadine, astemizole antimalarials e.g. chloroquine, quinine, mefloquine, halofantrine lithium antipsychotics e.g. haloperidol, chlorpromazine, thioridazine, pimozide Caution should be exercised when amiodarone is given with the following medicines which may cause low potassium and or low magnesium levels in the blood:- diuretics (water medicines) corticosteroids tetracosactrin amphotericin Amiodarone increases the blood levels of the following medicines and their dose will need to be reduced:- - digoxin - phenytoin - anticoagulants such as warfarin - ciclosporin
