How does it work?
Tiabendazole is a medication that is used in the treatment of a number of parasitic worm infections. It works by interfering with proteins in either the worm's intestine or absorptive cells. This leads to the worm not being able to absorb sugars which are essential for its survival. Therefore the energy stores of the worm are depleted, and this leads to it's eventual death within several days.
Tiabendazole is the main treatment for infections caused by Strongyloides stercoralis. This parasite lives in the gut and produce larvae which penetrate the gut wall. It is also used as an alternative treatment option in hookworm, whipworm, threadworm and roundworm infections.
Tiabendazole is indicated as primary treatment against Strongyloidiasis; Cutaneous larva migrans (creeping eruption); Dracunculiasis (guinea worm); Visceral larva migrans.
Tiabendazole is indicated as secondary treatment against Enterobiasis (threadworm) when the infestation is mixed with a primary indication.
Tiabendazole can relieve the symptoms and fever of trichinosis during the invasion stage.
Mintezol is indicated (a) when specific therapy is unavailable, (b) when other therapy cannot be used or (c) as additive therapy against Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale (hookworm); Trichuriasis (whipworm); Ascariasis (large roundworm).
