Side effects

Headache

Disturbed sleep
Awareness of your heartbeat (palpitations)
Sleepiness (somnolence)
Weakness or loss of strength (asthenia)
Abdominal pain
Diarrhoea
Fits (convulsions)
Loss of contact with reality (psychosis)
Dizziness
Nausea and vomiting
Depression
Anxiety and restlessness
False perceptions of things that are not really there (hallucinations)

How can this medicine affect other medicines?
There is an increased risk of irregular heart beats (arrhythmias) if mefloquine is taken with the following medicines:
- halofantrine (avoid use together)
- quinidine
- pimozide (avoid use together).
There may be an increased risk of the heart rate slowing down (bradycardia) if mefloquine is taken with the following medicines:
- beta-blockers eg atenolol, propranolol
- calcium channel blockers eg nifedipine, diltiazem
- digoxin
- tricyclic antidepressants eg amitriptyline.
There is an increased risk of fits if mefloquine is taken with the following medicines:
- antiepileptics eg phenytoin, carbamazepine
- chloroquine
- quinine.
When taking the ORAL typhoid vaccine, mefloquine should be avoided in the 12 hours prior to taking the vaccine and for 12 hours after the vaccine.
Warfarin levels should be checked regularly when taking this medicine.
