Flucytosine

How does it work?

Flucytosine is an antifungal agent used to fight severe infections caused by yeast and fungi. It is converted inside fungal and yeast cells to a chemical, fluorouracil, which is capable of preventing DNA (genetic material) from being produced. Fungal cells are therefore prevented from multiplying and their growth is slowed down. Flucytosine is limited in that it is only effective against a small number of fungal infections. It is therefore often used in combination with other antifungal drugs such as amphotericin.

What is it used for?

  • Fungal infection throughout the body (systemic fungal infection)
  • Severe fungal infections in combination with other antifungal medications such as ampthotericin
  • Treatment of fungal (cryptococcal) meningitis in combination with another antifungal drug such as amphotericin
