How can this medicine affect other medicines?
Methylphenobarbital blood levels may be increased by:
Chloramphenicol
Dextropropoxyphene
and sodium valproate.
Methylphenobarbital blood levels may be decreased by cimetidine. In addition, methylphenobarbital may decrease the absorption of cimetidine from the gut.
Methylphenobarbital may decrease the blood levels of:
Antibiotics such as chloramphenicol, doxycycline, metronidazole, and rifampicin
Anticoagulants such as dicoumarol and warfarin
Beta-blocker blood pressure lowering medication such as metoprolol and propranolol
Corticosteroids such as prednisolone
Digoxin
and theophylline.
Methylphenobarbital may decrease the effectiveness of:
Griseofulvin
Oral and depot contraception
and pethidine.
When methylphenobarbital is taken with phenytoin, the blood levels of both medications may be altered.
There may be a large increase in sedation when methylphenobarbital is taken with alcohol.
There may be an increase in sedation and difficulty breathing when methylphenobarbital is taken with pethidine.
