Side effects
Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.
Diarrhoea
Allergy to active ingredients (hypersensitivity)
Blood disorders
Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
Hair loss (alopecia)
Bruising
Damage to the liver
Increased tendency to bleed
Fever (pyrexia)
Pink or orange colouration of urine
Sore throat
Damage to the kidneys
The side effects listed above may not include all of the side effects reported by the drug's manufacturer.

How can this medicine affect other medicines?
The following medicines increase the anticoagulant effects of phenindione and the dose of phenindione may need to be reduced:-
- alcohol, allopurinol, amiodarone, propafenone, fluconazole, disulfiram, zafirlukast, raloxifene, acitretin, sulfinpyrazone, cimetidine, ritonavir, viloxazine
- anti-platelet drugs (aspirin, clopidogrel, dipyridamole, ticlopidine)
- anabolic steroids (such as oxymetholone and stanozolol)
- azapropazone, phenylbutazone(avoid use with warfarin)
- prolonged paracetamol use
- antibiotics cefamandole, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, norfloxacin, nalidixic acid, sulphonamides, metronidazole, miconazole, clarithromycin, erythromycin, azithromycin and ampicillin
- hormone drugs danazol, flutamide, tamoxifen, testosterone, thyroid hormones,
- lipid lowering fibrates
- occasionally influenza vaccine
- NSAIDS, particularly diclofenac, flurbiprofen and tolmetin can enhance the anticoagulation effect of phenindione and can increase the risk of bleeding due to their irritant effects on the stomach.
Quinidine may either enhance or reduce the effect of phenindione.
The following medicines reduce the anticoagulant effect of phenindione:-
rifampicin, carbamazapine, phenobarbitone, griseofulvin, barbiturates, aminoglutethimide, vitamin K
