Side effects
Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.
Rash
Diarrhoea
Allergy to active ingredients (hypersensitivity)
Hair loss (alopecia)
Damage to the liver
Nausea and vomiting
Bruising
Increased tendency to bleed
Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
The side effects listed above may not include all of the side effects reported by the drug's manufacturer.

How can this medicine affect other medicines?
The following medicines increase the anticoagulant effects of nicoumalone and the dose of nicoumalone may need to be reduced:-
- alcohol, allopurinol, amiodarone, propafenone, fluconazole, disulfiram, zafirlukast, raloxifene, acitretin, sulfinpyrazone, cimetidine, ritonavir
- anti-platelet drugs (aspirin, clopidogrel, dipyridamole, ticlopidine)
- anabolic steroids (such as oxymetholone and stanozolol)
- azapropazone, phenylbutazone(avoid use with nicoumalone)
- prolonged paracetamol use
- antibiotics cefamandole, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, norfloxacin, nalidixic acid, cotrimoxazole and sulphonamides, metronidazole, miconazole, clarithromycin, erythromycin and azithromycin
- hormone drugs danazol, flutamide, tamoxifen, testosterone, thyroid hormones,
- lipid lowerering fibrates
- occasionally influenza vaccine
- NSAIDS, particularly diclofenac, flurbiprofen and tolmetin can enhance the anticoagulation effect of nicoumalone and can increase the risk of bleeding due to their irritant effect on the stomach.
Quinidine may either enhance or reduce the effect of nicoumalone.
The following medicines reduce the anticoagulant effect of nicoumalone:-
rifampicin, carbamazapine, phenobarbitone, griseofulvin, barbiturates, aminoglutethimide, vitamin K
