Nifedipine (Contd)

How can this medicine affect other medicines?

Nifedipine increases the effect of medicines used to lower blood pressure. When first taken with other blood pressure lowering medication it may cause a large drop in blood pressure and therefore dizziness. The combination of nifedipine and a beta-blocker such as propranolol, can cause a severe drop in blood pressure and heart failure. Rifampicin increases the removal of nifedipine from the body, making it less effective. The effect of nifedipine may be reduced by the anti-epileptics carbamazepine, phenytoin and phenobarbital. Cimetidine increases the blood levels of nifedipine. Nifedipine may increase or reduce blood levels of quinidine. Nifedipine may increase blood levels of phenytoin. Nifedipine may increase blood levels of digoxin. Nifedipine may increase or decrease blood levels of theophylline. Cyclosporin may increase plasma level of nifedipine.
