Side effects

Slow, shallow breathing (respiratory depression)

Confusion

Nightmares

False perceptions of things that are not really there (hallucinations)

Mood changes, strange or abnormal thoughts or depression

Slow heart rate (bradycardia)

Shaky movements and unsteady walk (ataxia)

Sleepiness (somnolence)

Anxiety

Hyperkinesia

How can this medicine affect other medicines?

There may be a marked increase in sedation if secobarbital is taken with other medicines that cause a depression of the central nervous system such as alcohol, sedatives, hypnotics, or tranquilisers (e.g. temazepam). Alcohol should be avoided when taking this medicine. Secobarbital decreases the blood levels of: Corticosteroids Doxycylcine and anti-clotting medicines such as warfarin. The blood levels of both secobarbital and phenytoin may be altered when the two medicines are taken together.
