Side effects

Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Abnormal reaction of the skin to light, usually a rash (photosensitivity)

Skin reactions such as rash and itch

Liver disorders

A general feeling of being unwell (malaise)

Pain in the muscles and joints

Hypersensitivity reactions such as narrowing of the airways (bronchospasm), swelling of the lips, throat and tongue (angioedema), itchy blistering rash or anaphylactic shock

Dry mouth and throat

Inability of a man to have an erection (impotence)

Blood disorders

How can this medicine affect other medicines?

Food, antacids and sucralfate decrease the absorption of this medicine from the gut and may make it less effective. For this reason, lansoprazole is best taken on an empty stomach, and antacids and sucralfate should not be taken within an hour of taking lansoprazole. Lansoprazole may rarely affect the blood levels of the following medicines, and you should let your doctor or pharmacist know if you are taking any of these before starting treatment with lansoprazole: - carbamazepine - phenytoin - theophylline - warfarin.
