How does it work?

Aztreonam is an antibiotic that is related to the penicillin/cephalosporin family of antibiotics. It kills a specific range of bacteria. It works by interfering with their ability to form cell walls, and therefore the bacteria break up and die. Aztreonam is given by injection or infusion and is therefore generally used for more serious infections. If the bacteria causing an infection is not known, it should be used in conjunction with another antibiotic so that a wider range of organisms are targeted. It may be less likely to cause an allergic reaction in people who have had allergic reactions to a penicillin in the past.

Neisseria meningitidis infection

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. How can this medicine affect other medicines?
