How does it work?

This injection contains two ingredients, lidocaine and adrenaline. Lidocaine (lignocaine) belongs to a group of medicines known as local anaesthetics. Lidocaine acts to block temporarily the pathway of pain impulses along nerve fibres. This relieves or prevents pain in the area where it has been injected. Adrenaline is a naturally-occurring chemical produced in the body. One of its many effects is to constrict blood vessels through its action on the adrenergic receptors found in the walls of blood vessels. It is used to control bleeding in surgery and to slow the dispersal, and thereby prolong the effect, of local anaesthetics such as lidocaine. Adrenaline 1 in 80,000 is used in dental anaesthesia and for dental nerve blocks, whilst adrenaline 1 in 200,000 is used for infiltration anaesthesia and nerve blocks.

This medicine must not be injected into a vein (intravenously).

Use with caution in

Decreased blood supply through the vessels of the brain (cerebrovascular insufficiency)

Decreased liver function

Epilepsy

High blood pressure

Impaired breathing ability

Problems with the transfer of electrical signals within the heart (heart conduction defects)

Thyrotoxicosis

Not to be used in

Allergy to local anaesthetics, eg lidocaine (lignocaine)

Anaesthesia of local extremities such as fingers, toes, tip of nose, ears and penis

Not for use in intravenous injection

This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy. If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.

This medicine should be used with caution during pregnancy, and only if the expected benefit to the mother is greater than the possible risk to the foetus, particularly in the first trimester. Seek medical advice from your doctor.

There are no known harmful effects when this medicine is used by breastfeeding mothers.

Side effects

Blurred vision

Drowsiness

Shaking, usually of the hands (tremor)

Allergic reaction to active ingredient

Low blood pressure (hypotension)

Dizziness

Slow heart rate (bradycardia)

Decreased electrical impulses within the heart (myocardial depression)

Nervousness
