Xylocaine Antiseptic Gel (discontinued in the UK - June 2000)

How does it work?

This preparation contains two active ingredients, lignocaine hydrochloride and chlorhexidine gluconate. Lignocaine hydrochloride belongs to a group of medicines known as local anaesthetics. It works by blocking the pathway of pain along the nerve fibres, therefore allowing relief of pain in the area where the preparation has been applied. Chlorhexidine gluconate is an antiseptic which is effective against a wide range of bacteria, yeasts, viruses and some fungi. It binds strongly to skin, mucosa and other tissues and is therefore poorly absorbed into the blood. It is most commonly used as an antiseptic skin cleanser before surgery. This preparation is used to numb and clean the area where it is applied. It is commonly used on mucous membranes such as the mouth and throat, and the urethra (tube which conducts urine from the bladder to the exterior).
