How does it work?
Prednisolone belongs to a group of medicines known as the corticosteriods that are used for their ability to reduce swelling (inflammation).
What is it used for?

Crohn's disease

Inflammation of the bowel and back passage
Warning!
- You should not suddenly stop taking this medicine unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
- Avoid prolonged use.
- Live vaccines (e.g. polio) should not be given to individuals with a weak immune system.
Use with caution in

Dormant (currently inactive) tuberculosis infection
- Elderly people

High blood pressure
- Individuals with existing supressed production of hormones from the adrenal gland (adrenal suppression)

- Liver failure

Osteoporosis in postmenopausal women
- People with decreased defences against disease or infection (impaired immune response) due to disease or treatment

Peptic ulcer
- Previous corticosteroid induced muscle weakness and wasting (myopathy)
- Psychiatric disorders
Not to be used in
- Children
- Untreated infection
This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.
- This medicine should be used with caution during pregnancy, and only if the expected benefit to the mother is greater than any possible risk to the foetus. Seek medical advice from your doctor.
- This medicine passes into breast milk. Seek medical advice from your doctor before using this medicine during breastfeeding.
Side effects
Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.
- Difficulty in sleeping (insomnia)
- Depression
- Allergy to active ingredients (hypersensitivity)
- Disturbances of the gut such as diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain
- Irregular menstrual cycle
- Decreased functioning of the adrenal gland (adrenal suppression)
- Hormonal changes eg enlargement of testis, breasts, production of milk and increased hair growth.
- Skin disorders
- Disturbances of the body's fluid content and the levels of salts dissolved in the blood
- Disorders invoving the eyes such as glaucoma and cateracts
- Aggravation of epilepsy
