Mesalazine Tablets

How does it work?

Mesalazine belongs to a group of medicines called the aminosalicylates. It is used for reducing inflammation in ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is a condition in which there is inflammation of the large intestine. This results in ulceration and bleeding in the intestine and causes symptoms including adominal pain and diarrhoea that is mixed with blood, pus and mucus. Mesalazine works by reducing the inflammation in the intestine, which in turn reduces the symptoms of the disease. The way in which mesalazine does this is not fully understood. The tablets are designed to pass through the stomach and small intestine without being absorbed, so that the active ingredient is delivered directly to the site of inflammation in the large intestine. Mesalazine is used for the short term treatment of attacks of ulcerative colitis. It can also be used regularly to maintain continued reduction of inflammation, when the disease is in remission. This therefore prevents attacks.
