Naloxone hydrochloride

How does it work?

Naloxone hydrochloride belongs to a class of medicines known as opioid antagonists, which block the actions of opioid medicines. Opioids are similar to morphine in structure and are commonly used for their potent, pain killing properties. Other illegal opioids such as heroin, also produce similar effects, but are more likely to cause dependence or addiction. Excessive opioid intake or abuse is known to cause reduced lung function (respiratory depression), which can be life threatening. Naloxone acts by specifically blocking opioid receptors in the brain to prevent the action of opioids, and as such, it is used in the treatment of respiratory depression caused by opioid overdosage.
