Side effects

Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.

Disturbances of the gut such as diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain

Low blood potassium level (hypokalaemia)

High blood calcium level (hypercalcaemia)

Low blood magnesium level (hypomagnesaemia)

Loss of appetite

High blood sodium level (hypernatraemia)

Death of the lining of the colon (colonic necrosis)

Severe constipation (faecal impaction, intestinal concretion)

Sudden, severe chest infection (acute bronchitis and/or bronchopneumonia)

How can this medicine affect other medicines?

There may be an increased incidence of the toxic effects of digoxin, if blood potassium levels become low due to sodium polystyrene sulphonate. Salt containing antacids (such as magnesium or aluminium) may cause an increase in the pH of body fluids (systemic alkalosis) if taken with sodium polystyrene sulphonate. In addition, any medicine containing these salts may decrease the effectiveness of sodium polystyrene sulphonate at binding potassium. Sodium polystyrene sulphonate should not be combined with sorbitol to make a suspension enema. This combination may result in death of the lining of the colon (colonic necrosis). There may be an increase in the incidence of intestinal blockage and severe constipation when sodium polystyrene sulphonate is taken with aluminium hydroxide.
