Rennie liquid relief

How does it work?

Rennie liquid relief oral suspension contains three active ingredients, calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate and sodium alginate.

Calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate are commonly used as antacids in a variety of preparations. They alter the acidity of the stomach's juices, by binding to excess acid. This decreases the acidity of the contents of the stomach which may in turn help to relieve the symptoms of ulcers, heartburn or dyspepsia. Sodium alginate forms a "raft" which floats on the surface of the stomach contents. This prevents the acidic contents of the stomach rising up into the oesophagus (the tube connecting the mouth to the stomach). In severe cases the "raft" may be forced up into the oesophagus, enabling it to protect the lining of the oesophagus from the stomach acid. This allows healing to take place and prevents further inflammation.

Excess acid in the stomach (hyperacidity)

Heartburn (gastro oesophageal reflux disease)

This medicine is not to be used for long periods of time, as it may cause more adverse effects.

Decreased kidney function

Not to be used in

Children under 12 years of age

High levels of calcium in the blood (hypercalcaemia)

Kidney stones

Low blood phosphate levels (hypophosphataemia)

Severe kidney failure

This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy. If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.

There are no known harmful effects when this medicine is used by pregnant or breastfeeding mothers.

Side effects

Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.

Diarrhoea

High blood calcium level (hypercalcaemia)

High blood magnesium level (hypermagnesaemia)

Alkaline body fluids and tissues (alkalosis)
