Cyclizine Tablets

How does it work?

The exact mechanism by which cyclizine prevents nausea and vomiting is not fully understood, however, various actions are established. Cyclizine belongs to a group of medicines called antihistamines. These medicines block histamine receptors which are found in various places in the body, including an area in the brain known as the vomiting centre. This area controls vomiting. Cyclizine blocks histamine receptors in the vomiting centre, the result of which is to prevent the brain from sending the nerve messages to the stomach that would normally result in the action of vomiting. Cyclizine also tightens the muscles at the entrance to the stomach which physically helps to prevent vomiting. Furthermore, it reduces the sensitivity of the inner ear, which is one way in which cyclizine can control the symptoms of vertigo, however this is not fully understood.
