Promethazine Theoclate




How does it work?

Promethazine theoclate belongs to a group of medicines called antihistamines. These medicines block histamine receptors which are found in various places in the body, including an area in the brain known as the vomiting centre. This area controls vomiting. Promethazine blocks histamine receptors in the vomiting centre, thereby preventing nausea and vomiting. Promethazine is also used to treat vertigo, however it is not fully understood how it works in this condition.

What is it used for?

  • Balance problems involving the inner ear (vertigo)
  • Motion sickness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Warning!

  • This medicine may reduce your ability to drive or operate machinery safely. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you and you are sure it won't affect your performance.
  • This medicine may interfere with some pregnancy tests, causing false negative or false positive results.
  • This medicine should be discontinued at least 72 hours before allergy skin tests, as it may cause false negative results.
  • Use with caution in

  • Asthma
  • Breastfeeding
  • Bronchitis
  • Closed angle glaucoma
  • Decreased kidney function
  • Epilepsy
  • Liver disease
  • Obstruction of the bladder or intestine
  • Pregnancy
  • Severe coronary artery disease
  • Widening of the airways which may be hereditary or due to infection (bronchiectasis)
  • Not to be used in

  • Allergy to phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine and prochlorperazine
  • Babies less than one month old (neonates)
  • People who have taken monoamine-oxidase inhibitor antidepressants (MAOIs) in the last 14 days
  • Premature infants
  • Reduced awareness, slow reactions or drowsiness due to medicines or illness that reduce activity in the central nervous system
  • Unresponsive unconscious states (comatose states)
  • This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy. If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

    Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

    Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.

  • This medicine should be used with caution during pregnancy, and only if the expected benefit to the mother is greater than the possible risk to the foetus. Seek medical advice from your doctor.
  • This medicine should be used with caution by breastfeeding mothers, and only if the expected benefit to the mother is greater than the possible risk to the baby. Seek medical advice from your doctor.
  • Label warnings

  • This medication may cause drowsiness. If affected do not drive or operate machinery. Avoid alcoholic drink.
