Mebendazole works by preventing worms from being able to absorb sugars that are essential for their survival. This depletes the energy stores of the worms, leading to their eventual death within a few days. The dead worms are then excreted from the gut in the stools.
Ovex is used to treat threadworm infections. A single dose of one Ovex tablet or one 5ml spoonful of Ovex suspension is usually all that is needed, but a second dose can be taken after two weeks if the infection comes back. It is recommended that the whole family are treated at the same time.

How can this medicine affect other medicines?
You should tell your pharmacist if you are already taking any medicines, including those bought without a prescription and herbal medicines, before you take this medicine. Similarly, check with your pharmacist before taking any new medicines in combination with this one, to ensure that the combination is safe.
Cimetidine may decrease the breakdown of mebendazole by the liver and so increase the amount of mebendazole in the blood.
The manufacturer recommends that the antibiotic metronidazole should not be used in combination with mebendazole.
