How does it work?

This vaccine contains a sterile suspension of purified tetanus toxoid (modified bacterial toxin). It stimulates the body's immune response without causing the disease. Many infectious diseases occur only once in a lifetime. The body produces antibodies in response to the disease, which remain in the body to repel any future attack with the same organism. The duration of this immunity varies, but it can last a lifetime. Protection against many infections can be provided artificially using vaccines, which are made from a part of the inactivated infecting organisms. These vaccines stimulate the immune system in the same way as the genuine infection. This provides long-lasting active immunity. Some vaccines remain effective for a lifetime while others have to be updated every few years. With the tetanus vaccine, "booster" injections may be required. This vaccine stimulates the production of a specific type of antibody, which provides immunity against tetanus. Tetanus vaccines are given routinely to all children, normally in combination with the diptheria and pertussis vaccines. Boosters should be given to adults travelling to high risk areas or those who are potentially exposed to infection through injury.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.

Side effects
