How can this medicine affect other medicines?
It is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist what medicines you are already taking, including those bought without a prescription and herbal medicines, before you start treatment with this medicine. Similarly, check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any new medicines while taking this one, to ensure that the combination is safe.
Allopurinol increases the effects of azathioprine and mercaptopurine. A lower than normal dose of these medicines is necessary if they are taken with allopurinol.
Allopurinol may slow down the removal of the chemotherapy medicine vidarabine from the body and so may increase the risk of it's side effects.
Allopurinol may enhance the effects of anti-blood-clotting medicines (anticoagulants) such as warfarin in some people. For this reason all people taking anticoagulants such as warfarin should have their blood clotting time monitored when starting treatment with allopurinol.
Allopurinol may increase the blood level of theophylline. If you are taking theophylline your doctor may want to monitor your theophylline blood level if you start treatment with allopurinol or your dose is increased.
Allopurinol may increase the blood level of ciclosporin.
There is an increased chance of a skin rash if the antibiotics amoxicillin or ampicillin are taken by people taking allopurinol.
