Side effects

Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. - Rash
- Disturbances of the gut such as diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain
- Liver problems
- Decreased kidney function
- Bone pain
- Skin irritation
- Retinoic acid syndrome
- Disorders of the nervous system such as headache, fever, shivering, numbness, depression, insomnia, and tiredness
- Problems with hearing and sight
- Problems with breathing
- Heart problems such as irregular heart beats and fluid retention
- Dryness of the mucous membranes, eg lips, eyes, nose (causing nosebleeds) and throat (causing hoarseness)

How can this medicine affect other medicines?

Tretinoin reduces the effectiveness of the mini-pill and possibly the combined-oral pill contraceptives. Tretinoin must not be given with any medicine of the tetracycline class of antibiotics as there is an increased risk of raised pressure in the brain. As tretinoin is a type of vitamin A it must not be given with any other medcine containing vitamin A as it may increase the risk of adverse effects.
