How can this medicine affect other medicines?
It is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist what medicines you are already taking, including those bought without a prescription and herbal medicines, before you start treatment with this medicine. Similarly, check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any new medicines while taking this one, to ensure that the combination is safe.
Nalidixic acid may be less effective at treating urinary tract infections if it is taken in combination with probenecid, because probenecid decreases the excretion of nalidixic acid into the urine.
If nalidixic acid is taken in combination with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, eg indometacin, fenbufen, naproxen), there may be an increased risk of convulsions.
Nalidixic acid may enhance the anti-blood-clotting effect of anticoagulants such as warfarin and nicoumalone. As this may increase the risk of bleeding, your blood clotting time (INR) should be monitored more frequently if you are taking nalidixic acid with an anticoagulant. Your anticoagulant dose may need to be reduced.
There may be an increased risk of side effects on the kidneys if nalidixic acid is taken in combination with the immunosuppressant ciclosporin.
This medicine may increase the risk of side effects on the gut caused by melphalan.
Other medicines containing the same active ingredient
There are currently no other medicines available in the UK that contain nalidixic acid as the active ingredient.
