Topal

How does it work?

Aluminium hydroxide and magnesium carbonate are used as antacids in a variety of preparations. They alter the acidity of the stomach's juices, by binding to excess acid. This decreases the acidity of the contents of the stomach which may in turn help to relieve the symptoms of ulcers, heartburn or dyspepsia.

What is it used for?

  • Heartburn
  • Inflamed stomach lining (gastritis)
  • Upset stomach characterised by stomach pain and burning, nausea and excess gas (dyspepsia)
  • Warning!

  • To be used with care by individuals with diabetes. This is due to a high sugar content in the preparation (check the sugar content).
  • Use with caution in

  • Abnormally high pH of body fluids (alkalosis)
  • High blood levels of magnesium (hypermagnesaemia)
  • Low blood phosphate levels (hypophosphataemia)
  • Severely decreased kidney function
  • Weak or debilitated people
  • Not to be used in

    Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.

  • Pregnant women should consult their doctor before using this medication. The suitability of this medication depends on the stage of pregnancy.
  • There is no information available regarding the safety of this medicine during breastfeeding. Seek medical advice from your doctor.
  • How can this medicine affect other medicines?

Antacids may affect the actions of other medications. To reduce this effect there should be a two hour gap between taking the antacid and other medications. Antacids reduce the effectiveness of some tetracycline antibacterials.
