How does it work?

Ferrous sulphate is an iron preparation. Iron is a vital component of haemoglobin (oxygen-carrying pigment of red blood cells) and is therefore important in the formation of red blood cells. It is also a component of myoglobin, a pigment which stores oxygen in muscles for use during exercise. Iron is an essential component of several enzymes and is involved the uptake of oxygen by the cells and the conversion of blood sugar to energy.

What is it used for?

  • Iron deficiency anaemia
  • Warning!

  • This medicine may discolour the stools but this is harmless.
  • Take after food to minimize side-effects.
  • In pregnancy, it is advised to use an iron preparation with added folic acid.
  • Use with caution in

  • Inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease
  • Narrowing of the gut
  • Not to be used in

  • Decreased numbers of red blood cells in the bloodstream caused by an increase in their breakdown (haemolytic anaemia)
  • Genetic disease resulting in too much iron storage in the tissues
  • Iron storage disorder (haemosiderosis)
  • Known sensitivity or allergy to any ingredient
  • This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy. If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

    Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

    Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.

  • There are no known harmful effects when this medicine is used during pregnancy.
  • There are no known harmful effects when this medicine is used by breastfeeding mothers.

  • This medication is to be swallowed whole, not chewed.
