How does it work?

This cream is known as a barrier cream. It contains dimeticone (previously spelt dimethicone in the UK), cetrimide and arachis oil. Dimeticone is a silicone fluid, which is a water repellant substance. When applied to the skin it creates a barrier between the skin and water, or any irritating substances that are soluble in water. Arachis oil, which is extracted from peanuts, also forms a waterproof barrier on the skin. Barrier creams not only protect the skin from irritants, but also reduce water loss (evaporation) from the surface of the skin. As a result of this, the skin retains its moisture and itchiness of the skin is reduced. Cetrimide is an antiseptic substance, and destroys certain types of bacteria that can infect the skin. It helps maintain cleanliness of the skin. The combination of these compounds forms a water repellant barrier cream, which moisturises and reduces the risk of infection. This makes it suitable in treating conditions where the skin needs to be protected from water soluble irritants, for example when treating nappy rash in children.
