How can this medicine affect other medicines?
As this medicine causes an increase in urine output, other medicines which have a similar effect such as diuretics, should be used with caution when given concurrently.
The action of dopamine is increased by monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). In patients who have received MAOIs within the previous 2-3 weeks should be given a considerably reduced dose of dopamine.
The cardiac effects of dopamine are opposed by beta blockers (eg metoprolol, propranolol).
When dopamine is given to patients taking phenytoin, low blood pressure and slow heart rate may occur.
When dopamine is given together with tricyclic antidepressants or guanethidine, there may be a sharp rise in blood pressure.
When dopamine is given together with ergometrine, the risk of peripheral vasoconstriction (reduced blood circulation to the extremities) is increased.
