How can this medicine affect other medicines?

The blood levels of alcohol may be increased by this medicine. This can increase the effects of alcohol and cause blood pressure to drop. Verapamil increases the effect of medicines used to lower blood pressure. When first taken with other blood pressure lowering medication it may cause a large drop in blood pressure and therefore dizziness. Verapamil may increase the risk of the heart slowing and heart block. The risk of heart failure and severe drop in blood pressure is increased if verapamil is taken with beta-blockers. Rifampicin increases the removal of verapamil from the body, making it less effective. Phenobarbital and phenytoin reduce the blood levels of verapamil. Verapamil significantly increases the blood levels of digoxin to harmful levels. The dose of digoxin must be reduced if these two medicines are used together. Verapamil increases the blood levels and therefore the effects of cyclosporin, carbamazepine, theophylline and quinidine.
