Rynacrom Allergy Nasal Spray

How does it work?

This preparation contains two active ingredients, sodium cromoglicate and xylometazoline hydrochloride. Sodium cromoglicate prevents tissues becoming inflamed when an allergic reaction occurs. It is not fully understood how it produces this effect. It is known to prevent the release of chemicals in the body (including histamine), which occurs in an allergic response. These chemicals would normally cause inflammation. It is also thought to act on nerves by reducing their response to foreign substances such as pollen (allergens). Given as a nasal spray, this medicine prevents the inflammation of the nose that occurs due to allergies, such as hayfever. This inflammation would otherwise force fluid out of the nasal tissues, causing a runny and blocked nose. Sodium cromoglicate thus prevents these symptoms of hayfever. Xylometazoline belongs to a group of medicines called the sympathomimetics. It works by stimulating alpha adrenergic receptors in certain areas of the body. Xylometazoline acts on the alpha receptors in the walls of blood vessels causing them to narrow. This results in less blood travelling through the vessels which, in turn, decreases the amount of fluid pushed out into the nasal lining. This reduces mucus secretion and relieves the symptoms of nasal congestion in conditions such as allergies and colds. In combination, sodium cromoglycate and xylometazoline are used to prevent and treat the symptoms of hayfever or other nasal allergies (allergic rhinitis) where nasal congestion is a symptom.
