Quellada-M cream shampoo (malathion)

Quellada-M cream shampoo (malathion)

How does it work?

Quellada-M cream shampoo contains the active ingredient malathion, which is an organophosphorous insecticide that kills parasites such as head lice and pubic lice.

Malathion works by blocking the action of an enzyme in the parasite called cholinesterase. This enzyme is essential for the growth and survival of the parasite. By inactivating it, malathion disrupts vital metabolic processes in the parasites and ultimately leads to their death. Quellada-M cream shampoo kills head lice and pubic lice.

To treat head lice, the shampoo should be applied to wet hair. A sufficient amount should be used to work up a rich lather and ensure that no part of the scalp is left uncovered. Pay special attention to the back of the neck and the area behind the ears. Take care to avoid the eyes. Leave the shampoo on for at least five minutes before rinsing thoroughly with clean warm water and then repeating the procedure. While the hair is still wet, comb with an ordinary comb. A fine-toothed nit comb can then be used to remove the dead lice and eggs. This treatment should be carried out a total of three times at intervals of three days.

To treat pubic lice, the shampoo should be applied to wet pubic hair and the hair between the legs and anus. Use enough to work up a rich lather. Leave on for at least five minutes before rinsing thoroughly with clean warm water and then repeating the procedure. A fine-toothed nit comb can then be used to remove the dead lice and eggs. This treatment should be carried out a total of three times at intervals of three days.

Quellada-M cream shampoo is a water-based malathion product. These are preferable to alcohol-based lotions for the treatment of pubic lice, as they are less irritant to broken skin and sensitive areas such as the genitalia. Water-based products are also preferred in small children and in people with asthma or eczema, for whom the alcohol-based products may be irritant.

In general however, lotions rather than shampoos are preferred for the treatment of head lice and pubic lice, as they are left in contact with the hair for longer than shampoos, giving a greater chance of killing the lice and their eggs.
