Pyridoxine

Health and Nutrition > Medicines > P

Health Centres - Pyridoxine

How does it work?

Pyridoxine plays a vital role in the activities of many enzymes. It is essential for the breakdown and use of proteins, carbohydrates and fats from food and for the release of stored carbohydrates for energy. It is involved in the production of red blood cells and antibodies and in the maintenance of a healthy skin and healthy digestion. It is also important for normal function of the nervous system and several hormones. Pyridoxine is obtained from the normal diet. Liver, chicken, wholemeal cereals, wheatgerm and eggs are particularly rich sources. Bananas, avocados and potatoes also contain pyridoxine. Pyridoxine deficiency may cause weakness, depression, anaemia and skin disorders. Permanent nerve damage may also occur. Pyridoxine supplements may be required by the elderly or by breast-fed infants. They may also be given to prevent or treat deficiencies caused by alcoholism and treatment with medicines such as isoniazid, penicillamine and hydralazine. Supplements may also help relieve depression caused by a deficiency of pyridoxine in women taking oestrogen-containing oral contraceptives and they may also help to relieve pre-menstrual irritability, depression and breast-tenderness.

Isoniazid causes an increased loss of pyridoxine, therefore extra pyridoxine should be given. Pyridoxine intake should be increased when the following medicines are taken: isoniazid penicillamine hydralazine oral contraceptives Large doses of pyridoxine may cause a reduction in the blood levels of phenytoin and phenobarbitone.
