Polytar AF

How does it work?

This preparation contains two active ingredients, tar blend and zinc pyrithione in a shampoo base. Tar blend is made up of a number of ingredients including pine tar, cade oil, coal tar solution, arachis oil and an extract of coal tar. Coal tar has the main effect in this blend, by reducing itching and acting as a mild antiseptic. It also acts as a keratolytic agent. Keratin is a protein that forms part of the skin structure and can cause thickening of the skin when in excess. Keratolytic agents, such as coal tar, act by breaking down keratin and therefore help to reduce the excessive hardening, thickening and scaling of the skin. Zinc pyrithione acts to stop the growth of certain bacteria and fungi that are commonly found on the scalp. This preparation is used to treat scalp disorders such as dandruff, psoriasis and an inflammatory skin condition known as seborrhoeic dermatitis in which there is an excess secretion of oil (sebum) from the glands in the skin.
