How does it work?
Phosphate-Sandoz effervescent tablets contain the active ingredients, sodium acid phosphate, sodium bicarbonate and potassium bicarbonate. It works by binding to calcium in the gut. This prevents the absorption into the bloodstream of calcium consumed in the diet, thereby decreasing blood calcium levels.
This preparation is used to lower abnormally high levels of calcium in the blood (hypercalcaemia), which can occur in various conditions e.g. hyperparathyroidism. In hyperparathyroidism there is an over-production of the parathyroid hormone by the body. This hormone normally regulates calcium and phosphate levels in the body, acting chiefly on the bone and kidney. At low levels the parathyroid hormone favours bone formation but it opposes this action at high levels, with an associated high blood level of calcium.
Similarly, in certain types of cancer there may also be an increase in blood calcium levels, due to destruction of bone resulting in release of calcium into the blood.
Dehydration, associated with the loss of salts from the body, which occurs with hypercalcaemia is corrected by the presence of sodium and potassium in this preparation.
This medicine is also effective in replacing phosphate in conditions of low blood phosphate levels (hypophosphataemia). It is used to treat hypophosphataemia in vitamin D resistant rickets and vitamin D resistant osteomalacia. These are genetic conditions in which there is an excess loss of phosphate via the urine, resulting in poor bone formation. The bones become painfully soft and bend easily.
What is it used for?
High levels of calcium in the blood (hypercalcaemia)
Low blood phosphate levels (hypophosphataemia) associated with the genetic bone diseases - rickets or osteomalacia
Warning!
Blood tests are required to monitor the blood levels of calcium and phosphate.
Use with caution in
Conditions requiring restricted sodium intake e.g. heart failure or high blood pressure
Decreased kidney function
Elderly people
Pre-eclampsia
Not to be used in
No known conditions
