Phenylephrine Injection

Health and Nutrition > Medicines > P

Health Centres - Phenylephrine Injection

How does it work?

Phenylephrine belongs to a group of medicines known as sympathomimetics. It acts by stimulating alpha adrenergic receptors. Phenylephrine acts on alpha receptors in the muscles of the blood vessel walls, causing the muscles to contract. This results in a narrowing of the peripheral blood vessels and increased arterial pressure. It also causes a reflex slowing of the heart. It is used for the treatment of hypotensive states (low blood pressure) such as circulatory failure or during spinal anaesthesia.

What is it used for?

- Low blood pressure (hypotension)

Use with caution in

- Advanced disease of the arteries in which fat sticks to the inner wall leading to obstruction
- Angina pectoris
- Closed angle glaucoma
- Diabetes
- Disease involving the heart and blood vessels
- High blood pressure
- Irregular heart beats (arrhythmias)
- Narrowing of blood vessels in the extremities

Not to be used in

- Hyperthyroidism
- People who have taken monoamine-oxidase inhibitor antidepressants (MAOIs) in the last 14 days
- Very high blood pressure

If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.

- This medicine should be used with caution during pregnancy, and only if the expected benefit to the mother is greater than any possible risk to the foetus. Seek medical advice from your doctor.
- This medicine passes into breast milk, however there are no reported harmful effects when used by breastfeeding mothers.
