How does it work?

Hydrocortisone belongs to a group of medicines known as the corticosteroids. Irritation of the skin or membranes causes the release of substances that widen blood vessels, causing the area to become red, swollen and painful. As the medicine is absorbed, it inhibits the action of these substances allowing the blood vessels to return to their normal size. Hence, this reduces the discomfort. Lidocaine hydrochloride (previously known as lignocaine hydrochloride in the UK) is a local anaesthetic. It is used to block the pathway of pain along the nerve fibres allowing relief from pain where the medicine has been applied. When used in combination, these medicines are used to relieve the inflammation and pain caused by haemorrhoids and other anal conditions.

This medicine should not be used for longer than seven days at a time. If symptoms persist after this period consult your doctor.

This preparation is for external use only.

Avoid contact with the eyes, nose and mouth.

Individuals should seek prompt medical advice if they experience persistent pain or bleeding from the back passage, especially if it is associated with a change in bowel habit, if the stomach is distended, or if they are losing weight.

This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy. If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.

This medicine should not be used in pregnancy. Seek medical advice from your doctor.

This medicine should not be used by breastfeeding mothers. Discuss this with your doctor.
