Health Centres - Ovestin tablets
How does it work?
Ovestin tablets contain the active ingredient estriol, which is a naturally occuring form of the main female sex hormone, oestrogen.
Womens ovaries gradually produce less and less oestrogen in the period up to the menopause, and oestrogen blood levels decline as a result. The declining levels of oestrogen can cause distressing symptoms, including vaginal dryness, inflammation or itching, and an increased susceptibility to vaginal or urinary infections.
Oestrogen (in this case in the form of estriol) can be given as a supplement to replace the falling levels in the body and help reduce the distressing symptoms of the menopause. This is known as hormone replacement therapy (HRT). HRT is usually only required for short-term relief from menopausal symptoms and its use should be reviewed at least once a year with your doctor. There is more information about the risks and benefits of HRT in the factsheet about the menopause linked below.
Ovestin tablets are only licensed for the short-term relief of the vaginal symptoms associated with falling oestrogen levels. The estriol helps to restore the vaginal tissues to normal and thus helps restore the normal microflora and natural acidity of the vagina. It relieves vaginal symptoms of the menopause, and increases the resistance of the cells in the vagina to infection and inflammation.
If you take this medicine for longer than a few weeks, your doctor may want you to take a progestogen medicine as well. This is because in women with an intact womb, long-term use of oestrogen stimulates the growth of the womb lining (endometrium), which can lead to endometrial cancer if the growth is unopposed. A progestogen is given to oppose oestrogen's effect on the womb lining and reduce the risk of cancer, though it does not eliminate this risk entirely. This is known as combined HRT. If a woman has had her womb surgically removed (a hysterectomy), endometrial cancer is not a risk, and a progestogen is not necessary as part of HRT (unless the woman has a history of endometriosis). Estriol is claimed to have a lower risk than other oestrogens of causing overgrowth of the womb lining or endometrial cancer, however you should discuss your length of treatment and need for a progestogen with your doctor.
Ovestin tablets are also licensed for treating female infertility caused by 'cervical hostility'. Estriol works by affecting the quality of the cervical mucus, making it easier for sperm to get through the cervix and enter the womb. This increases the chance of conception. The medicine is taken on days 6 to 15 of the woman's menstrual cycle for this purpose (day one is the first day of menstrual bleeding).
