Ossopan

How does it work?

Microcrystalline hydroxyapatite compound is a source of calcium and phosphate in a protein base which also contains trace elements. Calcium is needed for the formation of strong bones and healthy teeth and is involved in helping the blood to clot. It is also required to transmit nerve signals and help muscles work. Calcium is found in milk and dairy products, as well as spinach, nuts and sardines. Usually, calcium requirements are met from the diet. However, there are times when the amount of calcium required is increased, such as during pregnancy, when breast feeding or with advancing age. If there is insufficient calcium in the diet, supplements are needed. The bone cells normally continuously deposit and remove calcium and phosphorous, stored in a protein network that makes up the structure of the bone. In osteoporosis, bone turnover is increased, causing the bones to become weak and prone to breaking. Giving calcium supplements slows down bone loss and leads to stronger bones. A calcium intake which is twice the recommended daily allowance (RDA) slows the rate of bone loss. Calcium supplements are also given to strengthen bone in osteomalacia and rickets, which are diseases in which the bone becomes soft due to lack of calcium and vitamin D.

What is it used for?

  • Breast feeding
  • Childhood disease in which the bones do not harden due to a deficiency in vitamin D (rickets)
