Orthoforms contraceptive pessaries (discontinued in the UK June 2007)

How does it work?

Orthoforms pessaries contain the active ingredient nonoxinol 9, which is a chemical spermicide (kills sperm). Nonoxinol 9 works by disrupting the cell membranes of sperm, causing the contents of the cells to leak out. This affects the motility of the sperm and ultimately leads to their death. Nonoxinol 9 does not provide adequate birth control if used alone. It is only effective when used with barrier methods such as condoms, diaphragms or caps. It is used for additional protection against the risk of becoming pregnant.

A pessary should be inserted high into the vagina ten minutes before intercourse.

What is it used for?

  • Spermicide to be used in conjunction with a barrier method of contraception
  • Warning!

  • If vaginal or penile irritation occurs, discontinue use. If symptoms worsen or continue for more than 48h hours, medical advice should be sought.
