How does it work?
Nystatin is an antifungal which belongs to a group of compounds known as the polyenes.
Nystatin damages the fungal cell membrane by binding to a component called ergosterol. As a result the contents of the fungal cell are lost and it dies. This drug is selectively toxic to fungi because human or bacterial cells contain cholesterol rather than ergosterol.
Nystatin is used in the treatment of vaginal thrush and fungal infections of the skin. It is not absorbed and remains in the vagina or on the skin where it has its effect.
