Side effects

Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Itching (pruritus)

Thinning of the skin

Hair thinning

peeling of the skin on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet (palmar and plantar exfoliation)

Raised levels of triglycerides in the blood (hypertriglyceridaemia)

Dryness of the mucous membranes, eg lips, eyes, nose (causing nosebleeds) and throat (causing hoarseness)

Headache

Nausea

Abnormal reaction of the skin to light, usually a rash (photosensitivity)

Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)

How can this medicine affect other medicines?

When taken together with methotrexate the blood level of methotrexate and the risk of liver damage is increased. The following medicines should be avoided while taking acitretin:- tetracycline antibiotics high doses of vitamin A
