How does it work?
Naltrexone belongs to a class of medicines known as opioid antagonists. Opioids are similar to morphine in structure and are commonly used for their potent, pain killing properties. Opioids, especially illegal opioids such as heroin, are also known to cause dependance or addiction in individuals, if used for long periods of time.
What is it used for?
- To prevent the use of opioids in previously opioid-dependant individuals.
Warning!
- You should have regular blood tests to monitor your liver function while taking this medicine.
- For use only under specialist medical supervision
- This medicine may cause drowsiness. If affected do not drive or operate machinery.
- This medicine should only be used in individual who have remained opioid-free for a minimum of 7 to 10 days.
- Opioid ingestion, whilst on this medicine may lead to sudden life threatening opioid poisoning.
- Withdrawal symptoms may be experienced by opioid dependent people taking this medicine.
Use with caution in
- Decreased kidney function
- Decreased liver function
- Elderly people
Not to be used in
- Acute liver failure
- Individuals currently dependant on opioids and those taking opioid-containing medicines.
- Severe inflammation of the liver, with a rapid onset and of short duration (acute hepatitis)
This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
- The medicine should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless considered essential by your doctor. Seek medical advice.
Side effects
Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.
- Headache
- Rash
- Difficulty in sleeping (insomnia)
- Chest pain (angina)
- Fatigue
- Loss of appetite
- Dizziness
- Muscle and joint pains
- Anxiety
- Gastric disturbances including nausea, vomiting, gastric discomfort, constipation, diarrhoea
