Health Centres - Minijet sodium bicarbonate
How does it work?
Sodium bicarbonate Minijet is an intravenous form of sodium bicarbonate. It is used to neutralise acid.
What is it used for?
- Correction of metabolic acidosis associated with cardiac arrest after other resuscitation measures such as cardiac compression, ventilation, adrenaline and anti-arrhythmic agents have been used.
Warning!
- Arterial blood gas analysis, in particular arterial/venous blood pH and carbon dioxide levels should be performed before and during treatment to minimise the possibility of alkalosis.
- Accidental extra-vascular injection of hypertonic solutions may cause irritation or sloughing of tissue. The use of scalp veins should be avoided.
- When there is both respiratory acidosis and metabolic acidosis, both pulmonary ventilation and perfusion must be supported in order to get rid of excess carbon dioxide.
Use with caution in
- No known conditions
Not to be used in
- A history of urinary stones and coexistent potassium depletion.
- Abnormally high pH of body fluids (alkalosis)
-
Congestive heart failure
-
High blood pressure
- High blood sodium levels (hypernatraemia)
-
Kidney failure
- Reduced breathing (hypoventilation)
- Swelling due to excess fluid retention (oedema)
