Minijet sodium bicarbonate

Health Centres - Minijet sodium bicarbonate

How does it work?

Sodium bicarbonate Minijet is an intravenous form of sodium bicarbonate. It is used to neutralise acid. Sodium bicarbonate is used in a serious condition called metabolic acidosis. This is when the acidity of blood and tissues is abnormally high. It arises when the body's normal acid balancing mechanisms fail, for example, in cardiac arrest or severe kidney disease. Sodium bicarbonate neutralises the excess acid. Sodium bicarbonate Minijet is used for the correction of metabolic acidosis associated with cardiac arrest after other resuscitation measures such as cardiac compression, ventilation, adrenaline and anti-arrhythmic agents have been used.

What is it used for?

- Correction of metabolic acidosis associated with cardiac arrest after other resuscitation measures such as cardiac compression, ventilation, adrenaline and anti-arrhythmic agents have been used.

Warning!

- Arterial blood gas analysis, in particular arterial/venous blood pH and carbon dioxide levels should be performed before and during treatment to minimise the possibility of alkalosis.
- Accidental extra-vascular injection of hypertonic solutions may cause irritation or sloughing of tissue. The use of scalp veins should be avoided.
- When there is both respiratory acidosis and metabolic acidosis, both pulmonary ventilation and perfusion must be supported in order to get rid of excess carbon dioxide.

Use with caution in

- No known conditions

Not to be used in

- A history of urinary stones and coexistent potassium depletion.
- Abnormally high pH of body fluids (alkalosis)
- Congestive heart failure
- High blood pressure
- High blood sodium levels (hypernatraemia)
- Kidney failure
- Reduced breathing (hypoventilation)
- Swelling due to excess fluid retention (oedema)

This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy. If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.

- This medicine should be used with caution during pregnancy, and only if the expected benefit to the mother is greater than any possible risk to the foetus. Seek medical advice from your doctor.
- Breastfeeding - not applicable.

How can this medicine affect other medicines?

Sodium bicarbonate should be used with caution in patients receiving corticosteroids or corticotrophin. Sodium bicarbonate will cause the urine to become alkaline. This will increase the rate of removal of tetracyclines (especially doxycycline) but will increase the duration of action of medicines such as quinidine, amphetamines, ephedrine, pseudoephedrine. Hypochloraemic alkalosis may occur if sodium bicarbonate is used together with potassium-depleting diuretics such as bumetanide, ethacrynic acid, frusemide and thiazides. Concurrent use of potassium supplements may reduce potassium concentrations in the blood by encouraging potassium to move into the tissues.
