Micolette Micro-enema

How does it work?

Sodium citrate is known as an 'osmotic laxative'. It works by causing water to be drawn into the lower bowel. This increases the water content and volume of the stools, making them softer and easier to pass. Glycerol works by irritating the nerves in the gut wall. These nerves then make the muscles in the intestine contract harder and more often. When the gut contracts, it moves the stools along the gut faster. Sodium lauryl sulphoacetate is present in this preparation to lubricate the stools. All these combined effects lead to the relief of constipation.
