Magnesium Trisilicate Tablets BP




How does it work?

Aluminium hydroxide and magnesium trisilicate are used as antacids in a variety of preparations. They alter the acidity of the stomach's juices, by binding to excess acid. This decreases the acidity of the contents of the stomach which may in turn help to relieve the symptoms of ulcers, heartburn or dyspepsia.

What is it used for?

  • Upset stomach characterised by stomach pain and burning, nausea and excess gas (dyspepsia)
  • Warning!

  • This medicine should not be used for longer than seven days at a time. If symptoms persist after this period consult your doctor.
  • If symptoms persist despite treatment, seek medical advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Use with caution in

  • Decreased kidney function
  • High blood levels of magnesium (hypermagnesaemia)
  • Kidney stones
  • Softening of the bones when there is lack of Vitamin D in the body
  • Not to be used in

  • Children under the age of ten years, except on medical advice
  • Kidney failure
  • Low blood phosphate levels (hypophosphataemia)
  • This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy. If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

    Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

    Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.

  • Pregnant women should consult their doctor before using this medication. The suitability of this medication depends on the stage of pregnancy.
  • There are no known harmful effects when this medicine is used by breastfeeding mothers.
  • Side effects

    Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.

  • Constipation
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Low blood phosphate level (hypophosphataemia)
  • High blood magnesium level (hypermagnesaemia)
  • Kidney stones
  • Diarrhoea
