Maalox plus suspension

How does it work?

Maalox plus suspension contains three active ingredients, aluminium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide and simeticone.

Aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide are both medicines called antacids. They are used to reduce the acidity of the stomach's juices.

Stomach acid is produced in the stomach as a normal part of the digestive process. However, too much stomach acid can cause symptoms such as heartburn and indigestion. Antacids work by binding to and neutralising excess acid. This helps to relieve the symptoms of heartburn and indigestion associated with excess stomach acid.

Simeticone is sometimes called an anti-foaming agent or anti-flatulant. It is used to relieve pain and bloating caused by trapped wind. It works by bringing together all the small bubbles of gas to form a large bubble, which is then easily expelled by belching.

What is it used for?

Heartburn.

Upset stomach characterised by stomach pain and burning, nausea and excess gas (dyspepsia).

Excess gas in the stomach and intestines (flatulence or wind).

Warning!

Shake the bottle well before use.

If symptoms persist consult your doctor.

Use with caution in

Hereditary blood disorders called porphyrias.

Not to be used in

Weak or debilitated people.

Decreased kidney function.

Low blood phosphate levels (hypophosphataemia).

This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy. If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.

The safety of this medicine for use during pregnancy has not been fully established. It should be avoided in the first trimester and only used on the advice of a doctor at any other time.

There is no information available about the safety of this medicine during breastfeeding. Seek medical advice from your doctor before taking this medicine if you are breastfeeding.

Side effects
