Maalox suspension

How does it work?

Maalox suspension contains two active ingredients, aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide. These are both medicines called antacids. They are used to reduce the acidity of the stomach's juices.

Stomach acid is produced in the stomach as a normal part of the digestive process. However, too much stomach acid can cause symptoms such as heartburn and indigestion. It can also irritate an inflamed stomach lining or an ulcer in the stomach or intestine (peptic ulcer).

Antacids work by binding to and neutralising excess acid. This helps to relieve the symptoms of heartburn and indigestion associated with excess stomach acid or stomach and duodenal ulcers.

What is it used for?

Excess acid in the stomach (hyperacidity).

Heartburn.

Inflamed stomach lining (gastritis).

Peptic ulcers.

Warning!

Shake the bottle well before use.

If symptoms persist consult your doctor.

Any remaining medicine should be disposed of 28 days after opening.

Use with caution in

Hereditary blood disorders called porphyrias.

Not to be used in

Children less than 14 years of age.

Weak or debilitated people.

Decreased kidney function.

Low blood phosphate levels (hypophosphataemia).

Severe abdominal pain.

Blockage of the bowel (bowel obstruction), or where this is suspected.

This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy. If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.

Pregnant women should consult their doctor before using this medication. The safety of this medicine for use during pregnancy has not been fully established. It should be avoided in the first trimester and only used on the advice of a doctor at any other time.

There is no information available about the safety of this medicine during breastfeeding and it should be used with caution. Seek medical advice from your doctor before taking this medicine if you are breastfeeding.

Side effects
