How does it work?
This medicine contains two active ingredients, flumetasone pivalate (previously spelt flumethasone in the UK) and clioquinol.
Flumetasone belongs to a group of medicines known as corticosteroids. These act inside the cells to decrease the release of certain chemicals that are important in the immune system. By decreasing the release of these chemicals in a particular area, inflammation is reduced.
Clioquinol has antifungal and antibacterial actions. It works by preventing the growth and multiplication of the organisms.
Flumetasone in combination with clioquinol is used for the short-term treatment of mild bacterial or fungal infections of the outer ear.
What is it used for?
Inflammatory conditions of the outer ear where a secondary infection is suspected.
Warning!
Avoid contact with the eyes.
Prolonged use of topical corticosteroids (including eye/ear/nose preparations) or application to large areas of skin, can result in sufficient absorption of the corticosteroid into the bloodstream to prevent the normal production of natural steroid hormones by the adrenal glands (adrenal suppression). This is more likely to occur in infants and children. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for further information.
The ferric chloride test for phenylketonuria may give a false positive result if clioquinol is presnet in the urine.
