How can this medicine affect other medicines?

The use of ergotamine with the macrolide antibiotics (erythromycin, troleandomycin, josamycin or midecamycin) is contraindicated. The combination can cause an increase in the levels of ergotamine which may lead to serious adverse effects. The use of ritonavir with ergotamine is contraindicated as the combination may potentially lead to serious adverse effects. The use of other ergot alkaloids, sumatriptan, nicotine (eg. heavy smoking), and other medicines which bind to serotoinin receptors should be avoided when taking ergotamine. These combinations may enhance the narrowing of blood vessels which may lead to adverse effects. If these medicines are to be used, they should be taken at least 24 hours after the dose of ergotamine.
